First off, wishing everyone a joyful and blessed solstice! May the coming 6months bring more light and joy into our lives! I know the subject line is from a Christian song, but the feeling is what I think of for Yule as well. It's the slow trickle of joy and light back into our lives, even in such darkness. I hope the coming year gives you wonderful things that make you happy.
I have a pretty chill day. A couple small errands, but not much else. I'm meeting with a friend for breakfast, and I need to wrap presents for her kids. (I've got a few things to wrap, actually. Though for the family's stuff, I'm going to be wrapping on Christmas eve, since some stuff might not arrive til then.)
I don't have a ton to wrap. Two presents for my friend's kids, and then for Jess I have their big present, which is goind to be fun to wrap. Then, I've got a big-ish one for my sister. I've got BIL's fudge, which says it'll be here on Tuesday. My sister's earrings say they'll be here on Wednesday. I'm hoping they're right. It's possible some of those go in a gift bag.
Yesterday was a mixed bag of a day. Mostly good, with one really shitty interlude. The winery is out in the middle of nowhere, so we stopped for lunch on the way up, and drove there. They take you down so many winding farm roads. We got there, no problem, got the order (good lord, what have I done?) and headed home, driving back down other farm roads. We got out of them onto a main road, and stopped for donuts, then hopped back on I-83 to head home.
By the time we started on the interstate, I was a little queasy from car sickness, but we had another 45 minutes to get home, so I sucked it up. I ate a mint, which helped some. But still, we had more driving to do. I normally don't get car sick. But I had that headache (not helped by the sun stabbing me directly in the eyes as it set, and the creeping nausea.
In the end, I made it to the entrance of our apartment complex before I had to throw up. It sucked.
I got home and laid down for an hour or two and felt more human. Actually, a little bit of a hungry human, so I got up and had a donut and ordered Jewish food. Knishes and latkes, yum. Then, daringly, I took a taste of the eggnog from Mt. Hope. It was delicious, and will be even better when it's cold. My sister hit up the growler of beer while I was napping, and I got a sip of her 2nd cup when I got up. Also excellent.
Many, many years ago, the week before I met Jess in the flesh for the first time, I was the best man at some friend's wedding. It was a backyard wedding, so I took time off that week to help get things together. One of the things we did was go to the liquor store and get a keg of Killian's Red Ale.
The day of the wedding arrived, and it was the hottest day of the year. And the wedding was outside. It was brutal, especially in my cotton long sleeved shirt, tuxedo vest and panty hose. So, we drank the Killians non stop. (I was young and stupid.) I must have had like 6 beers, but the heat was working overtime and I never felt the slightest buzz. Despite it, it was a fun wedding, and we had so much fun. So the red ales have a place in my heart. I will probably have a little bit tonight. Maybe try some wine as well.
Today, wrap some presents, go to breakfast, and then make beef stroganoff. I'm hoping it comes out as well as the last time I made it. Oh, and IKEA. I need to call the animal shelter I support to see if I can stop by to get the winnings I got from a virtual auction a couple of weeks ago. They're having photos with Santa, so I know they're going to be busy.
If they say no, that is 100% okay. We'll go next weekend. I'd like to get it before to give it as a gift, but we'll see.
We've got left over latkes and knishes for lunch, so that'll be nice.
Tomorrow, back to work for what will probably be a mostly quiet week. We close at 2 on Christmas Eve, so I plan to make my little turnovers with peach amaretto jam. I also have some phyllo pastry shells, so I'll have to decide what I do with them. Maybe some little appetizers for Christmas eve.
Okay, time for me to get to wrapping. Everyone have an excellent Sunday!
